If you follow my work, you know that I grew up in the hills of Eastern Kentucky. I’m comfortable being on a farm around animals, never afraid to get dirty. I often get asked if I’m from Texas, but people never guess Kentucky. I see it as a chance to share the love of my home state, its gracious people, and its beauty.

Parts of Sonoma County remind me of my childhood days. This image is one of them. There’s something about cows in a field that draws me. I remember going to my uncle’s farm on weekends with my dad to go fishing. We had to walk about a mile uphill, past the barn, and through the cow pies, to reach that magical pond. I remember it like yesterday.

I wish it was yesterday, but that’s another story. I’ve been away from those hills since I joined the Coast Guard in 1983. I’ve visited, had some wonderful visits, but in 1994, I was off the coast of Haiti. A shipmate asked how my day was. “Good, all things considered.” He was enjoying a smoke break from his watch in the radio room and wanted to talk. We did for a couple of minutes.

Then I felt a tap on my shoulder. It was our Executive Officer and the Admin Officer. We went to the flight deck. Looking out across the ocean, I heard the words, “Doc, your father passed away this morning.” It was time for another visit home.

When I first saw this image before capturing it, it reminded me of home. To this day, it takes me back to the farm where I learned to work, fish, shoot, and plant.

This image, more than any other I’ve taken, reminds me of home and all those wonderful memories. That’s why I want to share it. I hope it conjures fond memories for you as well.

Oh, my shipmate? He had just received the radio message about my dad. He passed the message on and took a break to check on me before I got the news.
