Description

It was my very first visit to majestic Yosemite, and I had the giddiness of a child on Christmas morning.

My anticipation was palpable driving on Wawona Road toward Tunnel View entrance. I wanted to capture Yosemite from my point of view, while standing on the shoulders of giants in photography that had gone before me and stood in the same spot. I always work to pay homage to the photography process, creating my art by allowing you to feel like you’re standing next to me as I set everything up.

As much as I love to go out and create images, 27 years in the military has wrecked my body in different ways. To look at me, I’m just another guy in the crowd, when in reality, my body is wrecked from those 27 years.

Luckily, my perseverance usually comes through, and I often find myself on the side of a hill or traveling back roads in search of the image I want to create. It’s those days when I realize that my gratitude is higher than my expectations, are really good days.

As I approached the tunnel’s entrance, I could feel my heart beating with a rhythm of anticipation, and the feeling of a magnetic pull, as if the very essence of Yosemite was beckoning me into its timeless embrace. Exiting the tunnel, there lay before me Yosemite Valley, bathed in the haunting beauty of black and white, as I had already begun to see the image in my mind’s eye. As I parked, I tried to take everything in. I heard the caw of crows, maybe ravens nearby, I heard no voices near me, I simply stood and allowed Yosemite to reveal her soul to me.

Maybe the time of day wasn’t ideal, perhaps the sun and clouds weren’t in the best position for a landscape photographer. None of that mattered to me.

I was intent in capturing my very first image of Yosemite. Yes, of course I saw it all in color, but my heart and soul were viewing this grand valley in the black and white I knew I wanted to share.

In that moment, I understood that Tunnel View was not just a place; it was a bridge to the very soul of Yosemite. It was a portal through which I communed with the spirits of the land, capturing their essence in black and white, preserving their timeless beauty for generations to come. I had found not just a view but a connection to the heart and soul of Yosemite, and it was an encounter that would shape my photography world forever.
