The wild had called, and I answered, even on this day when the weight of memory pressed heavy upon the nation’s soul. Point Reyes stood before me, raw and untamed, its paths empty save for the scattered metal beasts men left at trailheads. Twenty-seven years of soldiering had left their mark, yet something primitive stirred within me that September morning, demanding I press on.

I had not gone far when the movement caught my eye – there stood a beast that had survived countless generations of man’s encroachment. A coyote, its coat burnished gold in the wan morning light, turned its keen face toward me. Here was no domestic dog, no creature bent to man’s will, but a true son of the wilderness. When I broke the silence with the softest of sounds, the beast granted me one more pose, proud and defiant, before melting away into its domain.

In that moment, I understood something of the raw spirit that drives all living things – the same force that had pushed me beyond my limits that morning, the same savage will to survive that kept this coyote hunting these hills despite man’s best efforts to tame the land. This is what the photograph captures – not just a wild creature caught in morning light, but the unbreakable spirit that binds all survivors, be they man or beast.
