Description
Opening in May 1937, the Golden Gate Bridge stands as a modern marvel of ingenuity and construction. This iconic suspension bridge spans the Golden Gate, the one-mile-wide strait connecting San Francisco Bay to the Pacific Ocean. As one of the most photographed bridges in the world, I knew I had to capture it in my portfolio. Among the many angles I’ve explored, this image stands out, showing the bridge’s expansive beauty in all its glory.
Creating images like this is a passion, but my 27 years of military service have taken a toll on my body. On the outside, I look like just another guy in the crowd, but behind the lens, I’m often managing the challenges that come from my service. Some days, it’s a struggle to get up and go out, but I’ve learned that on the days when my gratitude is higher than my expectations, those are really good days.
Thankfully, perseverance often wins, and I find myself on the side of a hill or traveling backroads in search of the perfect shot. For this image, I stood on the road leading to Fort Point, just past Crissy Field, part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. With the sun high in the sky and billowing clouds overhead, I knew this was the spot. The Marin Headlands stood proudly in the background, showing their vibrant colors brought out by the winter rains.
Taken in the mid-afternoon—a time most landscape photographers avoid due to harsh lighting—this image defies the norm. Karl the Fog, San Francisco’s infamous mist, stayed away that day, leaving the Bay Area awash in sunshine. Commuters, bridge walkers, tourists, and I, the photographer unafraid to create in the middle of the day, were all part of this scene.
This image holds a special place in my heart. I once gifted it to a dear family friend who had immigrated to the U.S. many years ago. She told me that the Golden Gate Bridge was the first sight she saw upon arriving in our great country, and it remained etched in her memory. To me, this photograph is not just a picture but a testament to the enduring beauty of San Francisco and the resilience of those who create in the face of challenges.
